Keep your garage door locked

It seems like an obvious one but it’s one to remember – ensure that you have a key and that you keep it in your (locked) house. It doesn’t take much for thieves to notice the opportunity and find a way in.

Don’t leave the remote in your vehicle 

If you have an automatic door, it can seem like a perfect solution to keep the remote for it in your car for easy access. But this plan might not be such a good one, because if someone breaks into your car you will be giving them direct access to your garage and potentially your house as well. A safer alternative is to attach the remote to your keychain so you keep it on your person.

Keep your garage door as safe as your front door

Make sure your door is made of a sturdy and weather-resistant material. Whether it’s metal or solid wood, it needs to be strong enough to withstand potential intruders. Another good idea is to keep any windows blacked out entirely or frosted – don’t show off what you’ve got in there if you can help it.

Maintenance of your door

Following on from the above, you wouldn’t let your front door get to a point where it becomes unsafe, so don’t let your garage door become weak. Regular checks and fixing any problems quickly and effectively will make it a lot more difficult for thieves to gain access.

Lock any cabinets

Your garage probably homes a car – maybe even two – so this one seems a little redundant, but if you are holding other expensive possessions, such as power tools, in there, keep them as hard-to-get as possible. If you have cabinets, keep them locked at all times – and don’t leave the keys to them in the garage!

Install motion sensors
