What Type of Garage Door is the Most Secure?
If security concerns don’t already preoccupy your mind, luck may have been on your side up until now. After all, the police recorded 4.6 million crimes occurring in England and Wales in the year ending June 2016, a 7% increase on the previous year as recorded by the ONS, so preparation and security is key to avoid being a victim.
Unfortunately, preparing for the worst doesn’t work in hindsight, so there’s no time like the present to ensure that all aspects of your life are properly protected and secured, including your garage door. But which type of garage door is the most secure?
Sectional Garage Doors
A sectional garage door is a very sturdy and durable design that provides immense levels of security to your garage and belongings. The door is split into sections, each of which is lifted and folded back into the roof of the garage along a frame. Usually these designs are opened electronically, and therefore have an internal opening system that denies potential intruders an obvious point of attack.
Roller Garage Doors
As with sectional garage doors, roller doors do not usually have an obvious point of entry, favouring instead an internal opening mechanism that is hidden to potential intruders. However, where the two differ is that a roller garage door will take up far less room in your garage than a sectional one.
But just because they take up less room, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are less secure than sectional doors. On the contrary, roller garage doors are made up of layers of overlapping materials that mean the door is more or less impenetrable from the outside – perfect, therefore, for securing your garage!
Side Hinged Garage Doors
Some would argue that side hinged garage doors are the most aesthetically pleasing garage door on this list – others would disagree. However, what we can all agree on is that they look like they could withstand assault an attempted forced entry. But although the doors themselves may look sturdy, if you have only one locking system in place then intruders could easily gain access to your garage.
Multiple locking mechanisms should be used, some more concealed than others, and an adequate alarm system installed. Only then will you reap the security benefits of a side hinged garage door.
Up & Over Garage Doors
Although possibly the cheapest type of garage door on this list, unfortunately it is also the least secure. There are a number of reasons for this, but above all it is because of the material they are made of and their subpar locking mechanisms.
However, modern iterations of the up & over garage door improve on these dated, weak garage doors, introducing a multi-point locking system that requires great force to break. As thieves value quiet, modern locking systems should deter most would-be intruders.
