How to Make Your Garage Door Last
Whether you use your garage to store surplus items, as a place to keep your car secure or even an extended play area for your children, your garage is one of the most commonly used areas of your home. As such, making sure that your garage is properly looked after is vital if you want to ensure that it weathers the storm of these activities. In this article, the Dimension Garage Doors team will be showing you how to do just that.
How long should a garage door last?
When looking at extending the lifespan of your garage door, it makes sense to look at just how long the average garage door should last. We think that your garage door should last 20-30 years, give or take (assuming you don’t crash your car into it!). Despite this, how long your garage door will ultimately depend on a) the quality of the door you buy, and b) how well you maintain your garage door. With that in mind, here are some key maintenance tips:
If it’s broke, fix it!
Arguably the best way to keep your garage door in good condition is to complete any repairs that need doing when you first notice them. It can be easy to turn a blind eye to problems with your garage door, but ensuring that you don’t let small problems grow is vital if you want your garage door to go the distance. Inspect your garage door every couple of months or so to stay on top of smaller problems.
Weather seals
Weather seals are extremely important to ensure that your garage remains thermally efficient, and can also take quite the hammering. In the UK, the weather isn’t harsh enough to warrant changing your weather strips annually, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep an eye on them.
Lubrication
The first thing to do is make sure that your garage door springs, rollers and hinges are lubricated thoroughly and often – we would recommend every three months or so, to keep your garage door running smoothly. When it comes to cleaning the tracks, a light coating of WD-40 is all you need to ensure that they’re always functioning they’re best.
Combating rust
In order to combat rust, it’s important to stay on top of seasonal cleaning. Remove grime and dirt by washing both sides of your steel or aluminium garage door with a mild detergent and rinse thoroughly with some clean water. For added protection against colder weather, you can always apply some car wax to the metal surfaces, too.
